The Lagos State Government has announced a traffic diversion on Independence Bridge as the Federal Ministry of Works begins urgent repair works on the bridge.
In a statement issued on Thursday morning, the Lagos State Ministry of Works said the diversion would affect traffic on both the inbound and outbound lanes of the bridge to facilitate the repair works.
According to the statement, asphalt repairs are scheduled to begin on Friday, October 16, 2026, at night and continue throughout Saturday, October 17, and Sunday, October 18, 2026, with work taking place during both the day and night.
The ministry explained that the traffic management plan would involve the partial closure of each section of the bridge in phases, with at least one lane remaining open to allow motorists to reach their destinations.
Motorists have been advised to plan their journeys ahead of time and consider alternative routes to minimise delays during the repair period.
The statement added that officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) would be deployed to manage traffic flow and reduce inconvenience to road users.
It also urged motorists to remain patient, obey traffic regulations and cooperate with traffic officials throughout the repair works.
The statement was issued by the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi.
