The management of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Rumuolumeni, Rivers State, has suspended all remaining Students’ Union Government (SUG) Week activities following reports of a security incident on the campus.
The university announced the suspension in a statement signed by its Registrar, Dr Chinonye Abraham Ajie, directing students to return to classes on Thursday, August 13, 2026, for normal academic activities.
The development followed reports that a 100-level male student of the Faculty of Education was allegedly shot during an incident on campus.
However, neither the university management nor the Rivers State Police Command had confirmed the reported shooting or disclosed the condition of the student as of the time of filing this report.
An eyewitness said the incident occurred at the Faculty of Education and that the student was subsequently taken to a hospital for treatment.
The witness further alleged that the hospital demanded N300,000 before surgery could be performed, prompting the student’s course mates to raise funds to cover the cost.
The eyewitness also claimed that students had earlier received intelligence suggesting that two cult groups on the campus had declared hostilities against each other, with alleged directives issued to their members across the institution.
The witness criticised the university’s handling of an earlier security incident on campus, describing its response as an embarrassment to the institution.
In its statement, the university management announced the immediate suspension of all remaining SUG Week activities but did not specify whether the decision was directly linked to the reported shooting.
The statement read: “This is to inform the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education Community that all remaining activities for the Students’ Union Government (SUG) Week have been suspended by the University Management with immediate effect.
“Students are therefore advised to return to classes on Thursday, August 13, 2026, for normal academic activities. Any student who fails to attend lectures will be held responsible for their actions.
“Students are also strongly warned to desist from any action that is inimical to their academic pursuit and the peace of the University.”
The management did not provide further details on the security situation or explain what prompted the suspension.
As of press time, the Rivers State Police Command had also not issued a statement on the reported incident.
