The Lagos State Government has begun plans to introduce specialised vehicle number plates for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) as part of efforts to improve accessibility, mobility and inclusion across the state.
The proposed disability-friendly identification system was discussed during a meeting between the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) and the Lagos State Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA), where both agencies explored ways to collaborate on its development and implementation.
In a statement shared on Lagos State’s Facebook page on Wednesday, the Permanent Secretary of MVAA, Abdulrasheed Muri-Okunola, described the initiative as a major step towards achieving Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision of creating “A Greater Lagos That Leaves No One Behind.”
“The specialised number plates will improve recognition, accessibility and ease of movement for persons with disabilities throughout the state. The initiative also aligns with the principles of inclusive governance,” Muri-Okunola said.
He disclosed that MVAA had begun discussions with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on the proposal and would commence the required administrative processes while working with LASODA to ensure its successful rollout.
Earlier, LASODA General Manager, Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, said the engagement was aimed at developing a vehicle identification system that addresses the specific needs of persons with disabilities in Lagos.
She stressed that the initiative should accommodate all categories of persons with disabilities, as well as parents and caregivers of children with disabilities.
“The system will improve identification, accessibility and support for members of the disability community,” Oyetunde-Lawal said.
She added that the proposed number plates would further demonstrate the government’s commitment to creating an inclusive society where persons with disabilities are recognised, respected and empowered to participate fully in everyday life.
“The proposed number plates underscore the government’s commitment to inclusion and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities. We call on all stakeholders to embrace inclusion as a shared responsibility and support policies that advance the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities,” she said.
Both agencies reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the initiative, which is expected to align with the provisions of the Lagos State Special People’s Law. The law established LASODA to protect the rights of persons with disabilities, prevent discrimination and promote equal opportunities across all sectors.
The meeting was attended by directors and senior officials from LASODA and the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency.
