Alleged corruption: Court grants Ex-CCT chairman ₦100m bail

Yakubu Danladi Umar
A Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja, has granted former Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), Danladi Umar, bail in the sum of ₦100 million.

Delivering a brief ruling on Wednesday, Justice Peter Kekemeke ordered that Umar provide one surety in the same amount. The surety must possess a valid Certificate of Occupancy (C of O).

Umar was earlier arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a four-count charge alleging that he conferred undue advantage on himself while serving as Chairman of the CCT.

The former tribunal chairman pleaded not guilty to all four counts.

Arguing the bail application, defence counsel urged the court to admit Umar to bail on liberal terms, noting that he had previously been granted administrative bail by the EFCC and had complied fully with its conditions.

The defence further submitted that Umar honoured every invitation extended to him by the anti-graft agency throughout the investigation and had never attempted to evade the process.

The prosecution opposed the application, contending that the defendant posed a flight risk and could interfere with prosecution witnesses, some of whom served under him during his tenure as CCT chairman.

In his ruling, Justice Kekemeke held that the prosecution failed to provide sufficient evidence that Umar was likely to abscond or interfere with witnesses if granted bail.

The judge subsequently admitted the defendant to bail on the stated conditions and adjourned the case until October 29, 2026, for further hearing.

Umar will remain at the Kuje Custodial Centre pending the fulfilment of his bail conditions.
