Nnamdi Kanu’s wife denies filing for divorce, dismisses reports as false

Uchechi Okwu-Kanu, the wife of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu, has denied reports claiming she filed for divorce, describing the allegations as false and misleading.

In a statement posted on her verified X account on Friday, Okwu-Kanu said her attention had been drawn to “false reports circulating online” alleging that she had initiated divorce proceedings against her husband.

“For the avoidance of doubt, I have not filed for divorce. The publication is entirely false and should be treated as misinformation,” she wrote.

She expressed concern over what she described as the continued spread of unverified stories about her family, saying such reports undermine responsible journalism.

Okwu-Kanu urged the public to rely only on information released by her or her authorised representatives and thanked those who contacted her to verify the claim before sharing it.

Kanu, whom she married in 2009, is currently serving a life sentence at the Sokoto Custodial Centre following his conviction on terrorism-related charges by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja in November 2025.

The court found the IPOB leader guilty on all seven counts, sentencing him to life imprisonment on five counts, 20 years on one count and five years on another, with all sentences ordered to run concurrently.

Kanu has appealed the judgment. He filed a notice of appeal before the Court of Appeal on February 4, 2026, seeking to overturn both his conviction and sentence.
