Court remands Sowore in Kuje correctional centre

Omoyele Sowore
Justice Mohammed Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the hearing of his application challenging the revocation of his bail.

In a brief ruling on Monday, Justice Umar directed that Sowore remain in custody until the court hears and determines his motion seeking a stay of execution of the order revoking his bail and the bench warrant issued for his arrest.

The court also dismissed an earlier application by Sowore seeking the judge’s recusal from the case over allegations of bias.

Following the ruling, Justice Umar adjourned proceedings until June 24 for the hearing of the motion for stay of execution, which was filed by Sowore’s new counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN).

The judge had, on June 16, revoked Sowore’s bail after he failed to appear in court for the continuation of his trial. Justice Umar also granted an oral application by counsel to the Department of State Services (DSS), Akinkolu Kehinde (SAN), and issued a bench warrant for Sowore’s arrest.

Sowore is being prosecuted by the DSS over allegations that he made false claims against President Bola Tinubu, including referring to the president as “a criminal” in posts published on his X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook accounts.
