Six people, including four serving members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), were burnt to death in a fatal road accident on Wednesday in the Narehi area of Girei-Song Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
According to a statement issued by the spokesperson of the Adamawa State Police Command, Suleiman Nguroje, the crash involved a military gun truck travelling from Gombi to Yola and a commercial Hummer bus carrying five passengers from Yola to Mubi.
Nguroje said preliminary investigations indicated that the two vehicles collided head-on, causing the commercial bus to overturn and burst into flames.
“The unfortunate incident involved a military gun truck travelling from Gombi towards Yola and a commercial Hummer bus conveying five passengers from Yola to Mubi. Preliminary findings reveal that both vehicles were involved in a head-on collision, resulting in the commercial bus flipping over and bursting into flames,” he stated.
All five passengers in the commercial bus were burnt beyond recognition after the vehicle caught fire following the collision.
Police said preliminary identification showed that four of the victims were serving NYSC members posted to Adamawa State. Two of them were identified as Suleuman Juliet and Usman Shuaibu, both from Kaduna State, while efforts are ongoing to establish the identities of the remaining victims.
The police also confirmed that a military personnel attached to the gun truck died as a result of the accident, bringing the death toll to six.
“The corpses have been evacuated to the Specialist Hospital, Yola, while efforts are ongoing to identify the remaining bodies and locate their families,” the statement added.
Nguroje said the Commissioner of Police in Adamawa State expressed condolences to the families of the deceased, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the National Youth Service Corps, and all others affected by the tragedy.
