Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to developing a sustainable aviation ecosystem following the successful maiden international flight from Uyo to Accra, Ghana.
Speaking at a press briefing in Uyo after returning from the historic flight, the governor described the development as a major milestone in positioning Akwa Ibom as a regional hub for tourism, trade, and investment.
He said the inaugural international operation marked a defining moment for the state, signalling its readiness to participate in global aviation and expand its economic reach.
According to him, the aviation sector has continued to grow through expanded infrastructure and sustained investment in the training of pilots and engineers to support future operations.
Governor Eno also announced the establishment of a Ministry of Aviation and Airport Development, which he said would provide dedicated oversight, improve operational efficiency, and attract more international carriers to the state.
He explained that the new ministry would help consolidate gains in the sector and drive the next phase of aviation development in Akwa Ibom.
Stakeholders at the briefing hailed the development as a significant boost to the state’s economic prospects and international visibility.
Senator Ekong Sampson described the maiden international flight as evidence of the state’s commitment to sustained development, noting that it opens new opportunities for growth and regional leadership.
Also speaking, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Obong Ekperikpe Ekpo, conveyed the Federal Government’s commendation, describing the achievement as a landmark that elevates Akwa Ibom’s standing in Nigeria’s aviation sector.
The maiden international flight is expected to strengthen regional connectivity, unlock new economic opportunities, and advance the state’s ambition of becoming a major hub for tourism, trade, and investment in West and Central Africa.
