The day has come – Salah confirms Liverpool exit

Mohamed Salah
Mohamed Salah will leave Liverpool FC at the end of the season, bringing an end to what the club described as an “illustrious” nine-year spell at Anfield.

The 33-year-old forward, who joined from AS Roma in 2017, has made 435 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 255 goals to rank third on the club’s all-time scoring list.

Salah enjoyed remarkable success at Anfield, winning four Premier League Golden Boot awards and playing a key role in Liverpool’s Premier League title triumphs in 2019/20 and 2024/25, as well as their 2019 UEFA Champions League victory. His honours also include the FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, and two League Cups.

However, his form has dipped this season, with just five Premier League goals so far compared to 29 in last term’s title-winning campaign. His future at the club had already come under scrutiny following a reported fallout with manager Arne Slot in December, when Salah accused the club of “throwing him under the bus” after being dropped for three matches.

‘The day has come’

In a farewell video shared on social media, Salah confirmed his departure.

“Hello everyone. Unfortunately, the day has come. This is the first part of my farewell. I will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season,” he said.

Reflecting on his time at the club, he added: “Liverpool is not just a football club, it’s a passion, a history, a spirit. I never imagined how deeply this club, this city, and these people would become part of my life.”

Salah, who will become a free agent at the end of the season, thanked teammates and fans for their support.

“You gave me the best time of my life. I will always be one of you. This club will always be my home,” he said, referencing the club’s famous anthem: “Because of all of you, I will never walk alone.”

Liverpool confirmed the development in a statement, saying the forward had reached an agreement to “bring the curtain down on a remarkable chapter” at Anfield, while noting there is still time to properly celebrate his contributions before his departure.

Salah’s exit comes amid a challenging campaign. He was recently forced off after scoring in a 4-0 win over Galatasaray, which secured Liverpool’s place in the Champions League quarter-finals, but missed the subsequent 2-1 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion, a setback in the club’s push for a top-five finish.

His relationship with Slot had also appeared strained in recent months. After being left on the bench in a match against Leeds United, Salah admitted uncertainty about his standing at the club.

“I had a good relationship with the manager, and all of a sudden we don’t. I don’t know why, but it feels like someone doesn’t want me at the club,” he said at the time.

Salah’s departure will mark the end of one of the most successful eras for a Liverpool forward in modern history.
