Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday granted former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, bail in the sum of ₦500 million, with two sureties.
The judge ruled that each surety must own landed property in Abuja districts of Asokoro, Maitama or Gwarinpa. He also directed that the sureties submit their travel documents to the court.
Justice Nwite ordered that the property documents be verified by the Deputy Chief Registrar of the court, while the sureties are to depose to affidavits of means.
Malami was further ordered to deposit his travel documents with the court and was barred from leaving the country without prior permission. He and his sureties were also directed to submit two recent passport photographs each.
Pending the perfection of the bail conditions, the court ordered that Malami be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre.
The judge fixed February 17 for the commencement of trial in the case.
The bail conditions were also extended to Malami’s son, Abdulaziz Malami, and an employee of Rahamaniyya Properties Limited, Hajia Asabe Bashir.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has filed a 16-count charge of alleged money laundering against Malami, his son and his wife.
