Manchester United have parted ways with head coach Ruben Amorim, the club confirmed in a dramatic announcement on Monday, 5 January 2026.
The Portuguese manager, who joined the Red Devils in November 2024, was relieved of his duties amid growing dissatisfaction over the team’s performances and recent comments that highlighted internal tensions at Old Trafford.
At the time of his dismissal, Manchester United sat sixth in the Premier League table. Reports suggest Amorim’s departure came less than 24 hours after he publicly criticised the club’s hierarchy during a press conference following a 1–1 draw against Leeds United. His pointed remarks about his role and authority reportedly increased pressure on the Portuguese coach, who had been in charge for less than two seasons.
The club is expected to appoint an interim manager while preparations begin to identify a permanent replacement.
Darren Fletcher to take charge
A statement on the club’s website confirmed that former Manchester United star Darren Fletcher will oversee the team for their next game against Burnley.
“Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United,” the statement read. “Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May.
“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly decided that it is the right time for a change. This move is intended to give the team the best chance of achieving the highest possible league finish.
“The club thanks Ruben for his contribution and wishes him well for the future. Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday.”
