President Bola Tinubu has approved the renaming of the Federal University of Sciences, Azare, in honour of the late Islamic scholar, Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, recognising his outstanding contributions to faith, education, and leadership.
The announcement was made on Saturday during a condolence visit to Bauchi State, where President Tinubu paid tribute to the cleric, offered prayers for his soul, and commiserated with his family.
The President arrived at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa International Airport in Bauchi, where he was received by Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, federal ministers, and other senior officials. Among those present were the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, the Minister of Health, Ali Pate, and Shehu Buba.
Members of the presidential entourage included the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajuddeen Abbas, Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni, and other prominent figures.
Governor Mohammed expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the condolence visit and the decision to immortalise Sheikh Bauchi by renaming the university, describing it as a great honour for Bauchi State and Nigeria as a whole.
Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi passed away in late November, with Governor Mohammed calling his death a profound national loss. He praised the Sheikh’s lifelong dedication to peace, tolerance, and interfaith harmony.
A statement by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado, quoted Mohammed as extending condolences to the Sheikh’s family, followers, students, and the wider Muslim community.
“Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi was a towering figure in Islamic scholarship, embodying deep faith, humility, and wisdom throughout his remarkable life,” the governor said.
The revered scholar, leader of the Tijjaniyya order, hailed from a family with roots in Bauchi and Gombe and held a Tijjaniyya ijāzah recognised across West Africa.
