Italy international Gianluigi Donnarumma has been named the 2025 FIFA The Best Men’s Goalkeeper, claiming the prestigious honour for the first time in his career.
FIFA announced the award on Tuesday, recognising Donnarumma’s exceptional performances during a trophy-laden season with his former club, Paris Saint-Germain.
The 26-year-old played a pivotal role in PSG’s UEFA Champions League triumph, keeping a clean sheet in their emphatic 5–0 victory over Internazionale in the final on May 31, 2025. He also produced a series of commanding displays throughout the knockout stages of the competition.
Domestically, Donnarumma helped PSG secure the Ligue 1 title, the Coupe de France, and the Trophée des Champions, underlining his consistency across competitions.
He was also part of the PSG squad that finished runners-up at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025.
Now with Premier League giants Manchester City, Donnarumma edged out a strong field of nominees that included Alisson Becker, Thibaut Courtois, Emiliano Martínez, Manuel Neuer, David Raya, Yann Sommer, and Wojciech Szczęsny.
During the assessment period, his key achievements included winning the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League, Ligue 1, and Coupe de France titles, lifting the 2024 Trophée des Champions, finishing as runner-up at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, and earning a place in the UEFA Champions League Team of the Season.
The award winner was selected from a shortlist compiled by a panel of experts, based on performances between August 11, 2024, and August 2, 2025.
Voting was conducted by men’s national team coaches, national team captains, football journalists, and fans via FIFA’s official website. Each voting group accounted for 25 per cent of the final tally, with nominees receiving points for first, second, and third-place votes.
The goalkeeper with the highest overall points was declared the winner, with tie-breaks determined by the number of first-choice votes from national team captains.
Donnarumma had previously finished runner-up for the FIFA The Best Goalkeeper award in 2021. However, he has enjoyed significant individual success, notably winning the Yashin Trophy—awarded to the world’s best goalkeeper at the Ballon d’Or ceremony—twice, in 2021 and 2025.
