Amid heightened security concerns nationwide, the Senate on Tuesday announced a major reshuffle of several standing committees, fulfilling its earlier promise to reconstitute the Committee on National Security and Intelligence.
The changes were announced during plenary by the Senate Selection Committee, chaired by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Under the new arrangement, Senator Yahaya Abdullahi (Kebbi) has been appointed Chairman of the Committee on National Security and Intelligence. Until now, he chaired the Committee on National Planning.
The Senate also reorganised the Committee on Livestock and Animal Husbandry, naming Senator Shehu Buba (Bauchi) as its new chairman. Senator Buba was removed last week as Chairman of the National Security and Intelligence Committee.
In a related change, Senator Mustafa Musa (Yobe) has been appointed Chairman of the Committee on National Planning.
The Committee on Air Force also witnessed adjustments, with Senator Osita Ngwu (Enugu), the Senate Minority Whip, taking over as Acting Chairman. He previously served as the committee’s deputy chair before former chairman Senator Godiya Akwashiki became indisposed.
Senate leadership said the reshuffle is aimed at strengthening legislative oversight and improving the institution’s ability to respond to emerging national security challenges.
