The Senate has dissolved its standing committees on the Air Force, National Security, and Intelligence with immediate effect, announcing that new committees will be reconstituted within one week.
The decision follows expressions of dissatisfaction by Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele regarding the committees’ oversight performance.
The upper chamber also directed the chairmen of its committees on Army, Navy, Defence, Interior, and Police Affairs to brief the Senate within one week, in a closed-door session, on their ongoing efforts to reduce insecurity and to justify the continued existence of their committees.
In addition, the Senate launched an inquiry into the withdrawal of security personnel from a school in Kebbi State prior to a bandit attack, directing the committees on Army, Defence, Police Affairs, Interior, and Special Duties to jointly conduct the probe and submit their findings within two weeks.
The chamber also initiated a probe into the circumstances surrounding the killing of Brigadier-General Uba, with a report expected within the same timeframe.
Furthermore, the Senate resolved that its leadership should meet immediately with President Bola Tinubu to brief him on the resolutions reached during the security debate. Lawmakers also agreed to undertake diplomatic engagements with the United States to address the escalating security situation in the country.
