President Bola Tinubu has transmitted the Legal Practitioners Act (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill to the National Assembly for immediate consideration, marking a major step in his administration’s efforts to reform and strengthen legal practice in Nigeria.
The proposed legislation aims to raise ethical standards, enhance accountability within the legal profession, and expand access to justice nationwide.
Reading the President’s correspondence during Tuesday’s plenary, Senate President Godswill Akpabio said the bill introduces several significant reforms, including the issuance of practice licences for lawyers, a mandatory two-year tutelage period for newly qualified practitioners, and compulsory continuous professional development programmes.
In a separate development, the Senate adjourned its sitting in line with parliamentary tradition to honour the late Senator Okechukwu Ezea (Enugu North), who died last week.
