The Ondo State Police Command has arrested two students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, for allegedly conspiring to rape a 20-year-old female student.
Police spokesperson DSP Olushola Ayanlade confirmed the arrest in a statement on Monday, noting that the incident highlights the command’s strengthened capacity to tackle serious crimes.
According to the police, preliminary investigations showed that the victim was lured to the residence of her longtime friend, Queen Sodo, a 19-year-old undergraduate of the institution.
Ayanlade said the victim, who had known Sodo since secondary school, accepted a drink later discovered to have been laced with drugs, which caused her to lose consciousness.
“After the victim became incapacitated, Queen Sodo reportedly left the room, invited her male accomplice, and stood guard while the crime was committed,” he said.
A neighbour, alerted by unusual noises, reportedly entered the apartment and found the victim unconscious alongside the male suspect. She was rushed for medical treatment and later transferred to a specialist hospital, where she is now recovering.
Ayanlade said both suspects have confessed to their involvement and detailed their respective roles in the incident. Key exhibits including the drug-laced drink were recovered and positively identified by the victim and the suspects.
He added that the suspects remain in lawful custody and will be transferred to the Gender Desk Office for further investigation and prosecution.
“The command assures the public that offenders will face the full weight of the law, regardless of their relationship with the victim,” he said.
Ayanlade urged parents and guardians to educate their children about caution in relationships, warning that even long-standing friendships can be exploited for criminal purposes.
