Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup came to a painful end on Sunday as the Super Eagles fell 4–2 on penalties to DR Congo after a tense 1-1 draw in Rabat.
Frank Onyeka gave Nigeria a dream start with a third-minute strike, but Meschak Elia restored parity for DR Congo in the 32nd minute. Both sides pushed for a winner in extra time, with Nigeria creating the better chances, but neither team could find the breakthrough.
The penalty shootout quickly turned disastrous for the Super Eagles. Calvin Bassey missed Nigeria’s first kick, Semi Ajayi had his effort saved, and Moses Simon also failed to convert. DR Congo remained composed, converting four of their attempts to secure the win and advance to the intercontinental playoff.
Nigeria struggled to maintain control after Victor Osimhen was forced off early in the second half with an injury, and despite energetic displays from Terem Moffi, Tolu Arokodare, and Bruno Onyemaechi, the team could not unlock DR Congo’s disciplined backline.
While DR Congo move on with their World Cup dream still intact, Nigeria face the disappointment of missing the global tournament for the second time in a row, ending a campaign marked by inconsistency and missed chances.
