The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on the federal government to immediately clarify the nature of an alleged coup plot involving arrested military officers. In a statement signed by National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, the party stressed that it treats any threat to Nigeria’s democratic order with utmost seriousness.
The ADC said it has been tracking media reports linking some arrested officers to the purported plot, along with allegations that a former southern governor is under investigation for allegedly backing the suspects. It warned that such events should not be used to justify political witch‑hunts or suppress dissent.
The statement also flagged “conflicting signals” from government sources — notably the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) denying any reference to a coup plot — as raising “serious fears that the narrative may have been politically engineered.”
Criticising the government’s silence on the matter, the ADC suggested the plot narrative might be a diversion from governance failures and a pretext to clamp down on opposition figures.
The party called on the government to either decisively dispel the rumours or, if a genuine threat exists, to clearly brief the nation. It emphasised that national security should never be used as a tool to silence legitimate opposition voices.
