2027: Baba-Ahmed slams ‘deceptive’ ADC coalition, reaffirms loyalty to Obi

The 2023 vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Datti Baba-Ahmed, has criticized the emerging opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), accusing its promoters of misleading Nigerians with false promises of national redemption.

“They are deceiving us,” Baba-Ahmed said during an appearance on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme aired on Friday.

Baba-Ahmed was the running mate to Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential election, which was won by former Lagos State governor Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Despite growing speculation around the ADC-led coalition—which features prominent political figures like David Mark, Atiku Abubakar, Nasir el-Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi, and Rauf Aregbesola—Baba-Ahmed made it clear he remains firmly committed to the Labour Party and Peter Obi.

“I’m in the Labour Party. I’m a Peter Obi man,” he declared. “I still want Peter Obi to come back to the Labour Party and contest the 2027 election.”

Obi has already indicated interest in another presidential run and has been seen aligning with members of the ADC coalition. However, Baba-Ahmed expressed his hope that Obi would return to the LP and again fly the party’s flag in 2027.

When asked whether he would accept the role of running mate in the next presidential election, Baba-Ahmed responded: “If Nigeria is still around and there is an electoral system to follow. My love for Nigeria is undying, and I would appropriately associate with the group and individuals that are like-minded to restore Nigeria.”

He further stated that there are only two individuals he would consider deputising—though he declined to name the first, he reaffirmed his support for Obi. “The second one is Peter Obi. I’m always with Peter Obi until he decides not to [run],” he said.
