Folajimi Oyekunle, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has won the Ibadan North Federal Constituency bye-election held on Saturday in Oyo State.
Oyekunle defeated his closest rival, Adewale Olatunji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), to secure a seat in the House of Representatives.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officially declared the result on Sunday at the Ibadan North Collation Centre, located at Ikolaba High School. The Returning Officer, Dr. Abiodun Oluwadare, announced that Oyekunle polled 18,404 votes, while Olatunji of the APC garnered 8,312 votes.
Other candidates in the race included Femi Akin-Alamu of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), who scored 88 votes, Olabisi Olajumoke of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) with 40 votes, and Hammed Badmus of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), who secured 18 votes.
“Having satisfied the requirements of the law, Folajimi Oyekunle of the PDP is hereby declared the winner of the election,” Dr. Oluwadare announced.
Oyekunle’s victory has sparked a wave of congratulatory messages from PDP members and supporters across Oyo State and beyond.
The bye-election was held to fill the vacancy left by the passing of Hon. Olaide Akinremi, an APC lawmaker and chairman of the House Committee on Science and Research, who died on July 10.
