Court stops Ogun gov from demolishing Daniel’s properties

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun.
An Ogun State High Court has issued an ex parte order restraining Governor Dapo Abiodun and Ogun State officials from tampering with or demolishing the Asoludero Court, a private residence in Sagamu GRA belonging to former Governor Gbenga Daniel. The order also extends to Conference Hotels Limited and its annex, both owned by Daniel.

Justice O.S. Oloyede granted the order following an application for an interim injunction filed on behalf of Daniel and his wife, Yeye Olufunke Daniel, by their counsel, A.M. Kotoye, SAN. The application names as defendants Governor Abiodun, the Ogun State Attorney General, the Ogun State Planning and Development Permit Authority, and the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development.

According to the Certified True Copy of the order signed by Principal Registrar W.T. Ogundele and made available to journalists, Kotoye requested an ex parte order preventing the state government and its agents from interfering with or demolishing the properties pending the determination of the motion on notice.

In granting the request, Justice Oloyede stated that, after reviewing the affidavits in support and the affidavit of urgency, the court found it necessary to intervene immediately. He therefore issued an interim injunction restraining the defendants and their representatives, in any capacity or by any description, from tampering with or demolishing the Asoludero Court, located at Block 1, Plots 7 and 8, and Block XXXVIII, Plots 1 and 12, within the Sagamu GRA (now Awolowo Avenue). The property spans approximately 1.659 hectares, as described in the plan No. SA.160 (OG) attached to the original Certificate of Occupancy dated April 21, 2005, and its replacement, a computerized C of O dated January 20, 2010.

The court also barred any further attempts to trespass on the property or disrupt the Daniels’ possession of it, including enforcing a quit notice dated August 8, 2025, until the court hears the motion for interlocutory injunction.

The matter has been adjourned to August 19, 2025, for further hearing.

This development follows allegations made by Daniel on Saturday, accusing Governor Abiodun of directing the demolition of his private residence, Conference Hotels, and the hotel annex in Sagamu. According to Daniel’s media aide, Oliyide, notices of contravention, quit, and demolition were pasted on the properties around 4 p.m. on Friday, August 8, giving a three-day ultimatum.

Daniel described the move as politically motivated and accused the state government of thuggery and vindictiveness.

In response, the Commissioner for Urban Development and Physical Planning, Tpl Tunji Odunlami, denied any political agenda behind the notices. He stated during a press briefing on Monday that the notices were part of a routine audit of GRAs in line with the state’s urban renewal initiative. Odunlami maintained that all affected property owners, including Senator Daniel, were expected to present their documentation for verification and that the audit would be carried out across all government-owned GRAs in Ogun State.
