Tinubu appoints Akinfeleye, others to varsities’ governing councils

President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Chisom Obih to the Governing Council of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State. Obih’s appointment comes in the wake of a vacancy created by the death of a council member.

In a separate development, President Tinubu also named Prof. Ralph Akinfeleye, a renowned communications expert, as a member of the Governing Council of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State.

These appointments were announced on Tuesday in a press statement signed by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, Prof. Akinfeleye is a former Head of the Department of Mass Communication at the University of Lagos and currently serves as Chairman of the Centre of Excellence in Multimedia and Cinematography/UNILAG Radio 103.1 FM and Television. He previously served on the Governing Council of Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja.

Akinfeleye replaces Mr. Wahab Owokoniran, who has been appointed Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council at the Federal University of Transport, Daura, Katsina State.

Additionally, the President appointed Prof. Ibrahim Adamu Yakasai as Vice Chancellor of the newly established Federal University of Health Sciences and Technology, Tsafe, Zamfara State.

Other key appointments at the university include Mr. Hamisu Yusuf Yelwa as Registrar, Usman Nakazalle Sanusi as Bursar, and Dr. Shehu Aminu Liman as University Librarian.

Prof. Yakasai, a retired Colonel of the Nigerian Army, currently serves as the Provost of the College of Health Sciences at Bayero University, Kano. He also chairs the Committee of Provosts of Colleges of Medicine in Nigeria and is a Governing Council member of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo, Benue State.

He holds an MBBS from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and completed his postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom through a European Economic Commission scholarship. He earned both Membership and Fellowship of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

Yakasai also holds a Master’s degree in Medical Education from the University of Winchester and later obtained fellowships from the International College of Surgeons (FICS, USA) and the American College of Surgeons. He previously served as Director-General of the Kano State Hospitals Management Board.
