Lagos doctors begin strike over salary cuts

The Medical Guild, the umbrella association representing all medical and dental practitioners employed by the Lagos State Government, has declared a three-day warning strike over recent salary reductions.

In a statement signed by Dr. Japhet Olugbogi, Chairman, and Dr. Adekunle Akinade, Secretary, the Guild condemned the state government for unilaterally deducting salaries of medical practitioners without prior notice. They expressed deep concern that the pay cuts were imposed amid widespread economic hardship in the country.

The statement revealed that following initial protests, the Medical Guild engaged the government, which temporarily reinstated the previous salary scale after consultations. A joint conciliation committee was established to address the disputes.

However, the Guild said it was shocked to discover that the Lagos State treasury office implemented another salary reduction for all medical and dental practitioners in July. The Guild described this act as illegal, a breach of trust, and a violation of labor laws.

“At a time of severe economic stagflation driven by government policies and increasing migration of skilled workers (‘Japa syndrome’), other states are doing their best to support and motivate healthcare workers. Yet, in Lagos, the highest-paid doctor earns less than $1,100 monthly, and the government sees further cuts as a way to motivate the health workforce,” the statement read.

Following an Emergency General Assembly on July 26, 2025, attended by over 385 doctors, the Guild resolved that a total withdrawal of services will commence from 8 a.m. on Monday, July 28, 2025, until 8 a.m. Thursday, July 31, 2025, if the government does not reverse the illegal salary deductions and pay the 12-month revised CONMESS arrears owed to honorary consultants at LASUTH. After the strike, the Guild will issue a 21-day ultimatum to the Lagos State Government. If demands remain unmet at the ultimatum’s expiry, an indefinite strike will begin immediately.

The Medical Guild called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to intervene and reverse the illegal salary deductions to prevent further unrest in the health sector.

“We appreciate the resilience and sacrifices of our members during this difficult period,” the statement concluded.
