A 15-month-old baby has died in Belgium after being left inside a parked car on a warm summer day, officials confirmed Friday.
The incident occurred Thursday in the southern city of Namur. Prosecutors have opened a manslaughter investigation, saying initial findings suggest the child was “forgotten inside a vehicle.”
A forensic examination ruled out foul play and determined the cause of death was hyperthermia, or overheating.
Local media reported that the baby’s father had forgotten to drop the child off at daycare before heading to work, leaving the infant inside the car for several hours in the company parking lot.
Temperatures in Namur reached approximately 25°C (77°F) that afternoon.
