FULL LIST: Ayra Starr wins BET Award’s Best International Act

Ayra Starr
Nigerian singer Ayra Starr marked a major milestone at the 2025 BET Awards, winning Best International Act—her first-ever BET win—on Monday night.

The 21-year-old Afrobeats sensation led African nominees with three nominations: Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, Best New Artist, and Best International Act. Though she lost the first two to SZA and Leon Thomas, her international win underscored her rising global influence and the expanding reach of Afrobeats.

Starr’s victory was a bright spot on a night that saw other Nigerian artists come up short.

Tems, nominated twice in the BET Her category for Burning and Hold On from her debut album Born In The Wild, lost to Summer Walker for Heart of a Woman. Shallipopi (Best New International Act) and Rema (Best International Act) were also nominated but went home empty-handed.

Held at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles and hosted by Kevin Hart, the event was dominated by American artists, especially Kendrick Lamar, who won five major awards, including Album of the Year (GNX), Best Male Hip Hop Artist, and Video of the Year (Not Like Us).

Other key winners include: Chris Brown (Best Male R&B/Pop Artist), Doechii (Best Female Hip Hop Artist — she used her acceptance speech to address ongoing protests outside the venue), Future & Metro Boomin (Best Group), Blue Ivy Carter (YoungStars Award), Cynthia Erivo (Best Actress), Denzel Washington (Best Actor), Luther: Never Too Much (Best Movie), Angel Reese (Sportswoman of the Year), and Jalen Hurts (Sportsman of the Year).

Doechii’s powerful speech struck a chord with the audience: “As much as I’m honoured by this award, I want to address what’s happening outside… We all deserve to live in hope, not fear. And we protest against it.”

Ayra Starr’s win marks a new chapter for Afrobeats, signaling the genre’s growing recognition on the global stage.
