Liverpool have confirmed the signing of Dutch right-back Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen, the Premier League champions announced Friday.
While the club did not disclose the transfer fee or contract length, British media reports suggest the 24-year-old has joined on a five-year deal worth €35 million (£29.5 million), after Liverpool activated his release clause.
Frimpong’s arrival comes just hours after Liverpool confirmed Trent Alexander-Arnold’s departure to Real Madrid, positioning the former Leverkusen star as a direct replacement. Frimpong played a key role in Leverkusen’s historic 2023/24 Bundesliga title win and made 53 appearances across competitions this past season as they finished runners-up.
He will compete for the right-back position with Northern Ireland international Conor Bradley, who recently signed a new four-year deal at Anfield.
Frimpong, who came through Manchester City’s youth system, made his professional debut at Celtic in 2019 before moving to Leverkusen in 2021. At Liverpool, he joins a growing Dutch contingent under new manager Arne Slot, alongside Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, and Ryan Gravenberch.
Meanwhile, Liverpool are also in advanced talks with Leverkusen over a potential club-record deal for Germany international Florian Wirtz. Reports on Friday claim the Reds have submitted an improved bid worth £109 million ($146 million), including performance-based add-ons.
Wirtz, 22, is reportedly keen on a move to Anfield, despite interest from Bayern Munich and Manchester City. Named Bundesliga Player of the Season for his standout role in Leverkusen’s 2023/24 title win, the playmaker scored 10 goals in 31 league games this season and has 57 goals in 197 appearances since debuting at age 17.
If completed, the Wirtz transfer would make him the most expensive signing in Liverpool’s history.
