Marco Baroni has stepped down as Lazio head coach following the club’s failure to secure European football for next season, sporting director Angelo Fabiani confirmed on Friday.
Baroni departs after just one season in charge, guiding Lazio to a seventh-place finish in Serie A. The club slipped out of the European qualification spots on the final day of the campaign, suffering a disappointing home defeat to Lecce.
“Baroni has decided to leave for personal reasons,” Fabiani told Il Messaggero, a Rome-based newspaper. “We had a good season overall and were in the race for Champions League qualification right up to the final day.”
Despite the setback, Fabiani insisted the club remains committed to strengthening the squad, even without the additional revenue that European competition would have brought.
Baroni took over in the summer of 2024 after a turbulent season that saw Lazio go through three coaches: Maurizio Sarri, Giovanni Martusciello, and Igor Tudor.
Speculation is already mounting over Baroni’s successor. According to reports in the Italian media, former coach Maurizio Sarri—who has been out of management since leaving Lazio in March last year—could be in line for a return to the Stadio Olimpico.
