No political motive behind my presence at pope’s inauguration – Obi

Peter Obi
The Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has stated that his attendance at the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican was not politically motivated.

Obi, who was seen at the ceremony held at St. Peter’s Square in Rome on Sunday, explained that his participation aligns with his past presence at inaugurations, swearing-ins, and official ceremonies around the world—events he described as carrying deep moral and spiritual significance.

He was spotted alongside former Ekiti State governor Kayode Fayemi, and later with President Bola Tinubu at the event.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, Obi wrote: “This was never a political event and should remain untouched by politics. Some moments are best reserved for quiet contemplation.”

He clarified that although he attended the inaugural Mass, he did not participate in the Papal Audience and therefore did not meet Pope Leo XIV personally, noting that such meetings are traditionally reserved for heads of state and accredited diplomats.

Reflecting on the Pope’s homily, Obi emphasized the importance of its core message: the urgent need to fight poverty and foster unity beyond ethnic, political, and religious lines.

“The deeper meaning of the gathering lies not in ceremonial gestures, but in whether those present internalised his message and will return with the resolve to act,” he said.

“The fight against corruption is the essential first step toward building societies where resources are directed to what truly matters – education, healthcare, poverty alleviation, and infrastructure.”

Obi concluded by urging leaders at all levels to rise to the task of creating a more just, compassionate, and prosperous Nigeria.

Tinubu, Obi exchange greetings at Vatican

Meanwhile, Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga recounted a brief encounter between Obi and President Tinubu at the ceremony. According to Onanuga, Fayemi spotted Obi in the crowd and encouraged him to join in greeting the President.

“On getting to the President, Fayemi broke the ice between Obi and Tinubu,” he said.
Fayemi reportedly said, “Mr. President, welcome to our church, and thank you for honouring the Pope with your presence.”

Tinubu replied with a smile, “I should be the one welcoming you and Peter. I’m the Head of the Nigerian Delegation.”

To which Obi responded, “Yes, indeed. We are members of your delegation.”
