The Nigerian Senate resumes plenary today, Tuesday, May 6, 2025, to continue fulfilling its legislative responsibilities and address pressing national matters.
High on the agenda is the continued deliberation on the 2024 Tax Reform Bills. The proposed legislation is vital to overhauling Nigeria’s tax system and enhancing revenue generation across all tiers of government, with the ultimate goal of improving the delivery of democratic dividends.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele.
According to the statement, the Senate will also engage with the Executive to address persistent socio-political tensions across the country, with particular focus on the crisis in Rivers State. The aim is to promote reconciliation among stakeholders and tackle the underlying causes of the conflict in the interest of national stability.
The Senate is equally concerned about the escalating insecurity in Benue, Borno, Katsina, Plateau, and other affected states. As the nation’s highest lawmaking body, it will intensify collaboration with security agencies to develop more effective strategies for restoring peace and combating terrorism.
During the Senate’s recess, the Presidency announced several key appointments, including Mr. Bayo Ojulari as the new Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), as well as appointments to the South-South Development Commission. The Senate will begin screening these nominees and others requiring legislative confirmation.
Meanwhile, the ongoing Constitution Review process—spearheaded by Deputy Senate President Senator Barau I. Jibrin—will be accelerated to strengthen Nigeria’s federal structure. The Senate will also initiate a review of the Electoral Act, 2022, aimed at enhancing transparency and credibility in future elections.
Several critical bills across various sectors remain under consideration. The Senate is committed to expediting their passage and has urged its standing and special committees to organize public hearings to promote greater citizen engagement in the legislative process.
