Police resume issuance of tinted glass permits nationwide

Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun
In response to public concerns over harassment of vehicle owners with tinted windows, the Nigeria Police Force has reactivated the issuance of tinted glass permits, following a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

A statement issued by Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on Wednesday explained that the reactivation aims to address complaints about law enforcement officers targeting vehicles with factory-fitted tinted windows. The permits are now available through a secure, user-friendly digital platform at https://possap.gov.ng.

The initiative aims to create a transparent and accountable process for regularising the use of tinted windows, which are increasingly common in modern vehicles for comfort and aesthetics. The police highlighted that while tinted windows are legitimate, they have been exploited by criminals for activities such as kidnapping and robbery, complicating law enforcement efforts.

Adejobi explained that the reactivated permit system will help identify legitimate users, such as those with medical needs or security personnel, and reduce criminal misuse. The new system features digital permits with QR codes, identity verification through the National Identification Number (NIN) and Tax Identification Number (TIN), biometric capture, and background checks. Applicants can process their permits online, with a streamlined processing time of 72 hours.

To ensure a smooth transition, a 30-day grace period will begin on May 1, 2025, during which motorists must comply. Enforcement will begin after this period, with strict measures against any officers found engaging in harassment or extortion.

The Inspector-General reaffirmed the police’s commitment to modern, transparent, and citizen-focused policing, urging the public to embrace the initiative for safer roads and enhanced security.
