Dr. Victor Olunloyo, a former governor of Oyo State, has passed away.
In a statement released by his family on Sunday, it was revealed that Dr. Olunloyo died just days before his 90th birthday. The statement, titled ‘Victor Olunloyo Goes Home’, was signed by Oladapo Ogunwusi on behalf of the family.
“With heavy hearts but immense gratitude to the Almighty, we announce the peaceful passing of Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, former governor of Oyo State, mathematician, engineer, and renowned technocrat, just days before his 90th birthday,” the statement read.
Dr. Olunloyo, who held the titles of Balogun of Oyo and Otun Bobasewa of Ife, served as the first Rector of both Ibadan Polytechnic and Kwara State Polytechnic, among many other distinguished appointments.
His lifetime of service to the nation and humanity stands as a testament to his legacy, a source of pride for his family, friends, and associates, even as they come to terms with this profound loss.
The family has asked for the understanding of the press and public as they make preparations for a fitting burial for the elder statesman.
The statement concluded with a reflection on his faith: “Even from everlasting to everlasting, He is God.”
Approximately a year ago, in April 2024, rumors of Dr. Olunloyo’s death had circulated widely, prompting news outlets to report on his passing. However, in an interview, he vehemently denied the rumors, greeting a visiting reporter at his Molete residence in Ibadan. At the time, he reassured everyone with a defiant, “I’m still here, not yet gone.”
Dr. Olunloyo also expressed his frustration with the rumors, stating, “Those who spread death news and the person presumed dead will all die one day. I’ve been fortunate. My father died at 42, my mother lived to 102, and I am now 89—well beyond the expected lifespan.”
In the past, he also clarified that rumors of his death, which circulated in June 2022, falsely claimed he had passed away at the University College Hospital, Ibadan. A few days later, the family issued a statement confirming he was alive, although he was dealing with health challenges due to old age, and urged Nigerians to pray for his recovery.
