China called for “dialogue” with the United States on Thursday to address escalating trade tensions, which have led to both countries imposing tariffs on each other’s imports.

At a weekly press conference, Chinese commerce ministry spokeswoman He Yongqian emphasized the importance of a “positive and cooperative attitude” in addressing economic and trade differences.

“China has always advocated for constructive communication based on mutual respect, equality, and mutual benefit,” she said. “Threats and intimidation will only backfire. We hope both nations can work together to return to a path of resolving issues through dialogue and consultation.”

Since his re-election in January, US President Donald Trump has imposed tariffs on several major trading partners, including China, citing concerns over the flow of fentanyl and related chemicals.

This month, Trump escalated tensions by raising a 10% tariff on Chinese products to 20%. In retaliation, China implemented tariffs of up to 15% on a range of US agricultural goods, including soybeans, pork, and chicken.

Additionally, China, the world’s largest steel producer, warned on Wednesday it would take “all necessary measures” to protect its interests in response to new US tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.
