Lagos assembly backs Meranda as speaker, adjourns plenary indefinitely

Speaker, Lagos House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda
Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have passed a vote of confidence in Speaker Mojisola Meranda amid rumors surrounding her potential resignation.

The motion was introduced by Oladipo Ajomale, the representative for Oshodi-Isolo Constituency 2, during Monday’s plenary, reaffirming the assembly’s trust in Meranda’s leadership. The motion was seconded by Gbolahan Ogunleye, the representative for Ikorodu Constituency 1.

Following the vote, Temitope Adewale, the Majority Leader, motioned to adjourn the plenary indefinitely, a proposal that was unanimously approved by the House.

Earlier in the day, security personnel sealed off the Speaker’s office as speculation intensified regarding Meranda’s possible resignation. Police and task force officers were stationed around the complex in vehicles, with some patrolling the premises to ensure order.

Meranda made history on January 13 by becoming the first female Speaker of the Lagos State Assembly, following the removal of Mudashiru Obasa, who was out of the country at the time. Upon his return, Obasa contested the process, claiming that due procedure was not followed and asserting that he remained the legitimate Speaker of the House.
