A yet-to-be-identified officer of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), attached to the Lagos Division, has died after collapsing in an undisclosed part of Lagos State on Sunday.

The incident was first reported via a video circulating online, which shows the lifeless body of the officer being surrounded by sympathizers, including police officers. The officers conducted a search of the deceased’s belongings, during which an identity card confirmed that he was an EFCC officer.

In the video, a voice can be heard saying, “He works with EFCC. His ID card is with him.”

EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale confirmed the officer’s death in a telephone interview with The Telegraph on Monday. He stated that the incident is currently under investigation.

“Yes, the man is one of our officers. His death is under investigation. The incident occurred on Sunday,” Oyewale said.

This development follows a previous incident reported by The Telegraph on January 15, where Assistant Superintendent of EFCC Aminu Salisu was shot by a suspected Yahoo boy, Joshua Ikechukwu, during a raid in Onitsha, Anambra State. The EFCC operatives, who had traveled from the zonal headquarters in Enugu, were ambushed while attempting to arrest suspected cyber criminals.

Oyewale condemned any negative narratives surrounding the death of the officer and reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to ensuring justice is served.
