Governor Seyi Makinde (R) presents staff of office to the new Alaafin of Oyo, Abimbola Akeem Owoade (L)
Governor Seyi Makinde has officially presented the Staff of Office to the new Alaafin of Oyo, Abimbola Owoade, marking a historic moment for the Oyo Kingdom.

The presentation took place on Monday at the governor’s office in Ibadan, the state capital. Earlier reports had confirmed that Owoade was scheduled to receive his appointment letter and Staff of Office that day.

A top government source had earlier revealed to The Telegraph that Owoade would be officially appointed and begin his duties as Alaafin on Monday.

Governor Makinde had approved Owoade’s appointment in a statement issued on Friday by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade. Owoade’s appointment as the 46th Alaafin-elect attracted a distinguished gathering of dignitaries, traditional rulers, religious leaders, government officials, and jubilant Oyo indigenes.

The event commenced with prayers from Islamic, Christian, and traditional clerics, followed by vibrant music and cultural performances, symbolizing the significance of the moment in Oyo’s rich history.

In his remarks, Governor Makinde commended the Alaafin-elect as a leader chosen to preserve and elevate the cultural and historical legacy of the Oyo Kingdom. He described the new monarch not only as a traditional ruler but as a custodian of the kingdom’s heritage, expressing confidence that Owoade would lead with wisdom, integrity, and a commitment to unity within the kingdom.

“We are confident that Oba Owoade will lead with wisdom, integrity, and a deep commitment to fostering unity in our land,” Makinde stated.

In his acceptance speech, Owoade pledged to prioritize the development of the Oyo Kingdom and the welfare of its people. He vowed to dedicate himself to advancing the kingdom while safeguarding the traditions and values that have sustained the people for generations.

“I am committed to the advancement and prosperity of the Oyo Kingdom, while ensuring that the traditions that have guided us remain strong,” he declared.

Owoade’s ascension to the throne follows the passing of the revered Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III in April 2022, who reigned for five decades. The new monarch’s reign is expected to usher in a fresh era focused on cultural preservation, youth empowerment, and economic growth for the Oyo Kingdom.
