The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has appointed Baba Mohammed Azare as its 34th Commissioner of Police.
In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, and shared with journalists in Uyo, it was revealed that Azare joined the Nigeria Police Force as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and was trained at the prestigious Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil, Kano, where he graduated with outstanding results.
Azare, a native of Katagum Local Government Area in Bauchi State, holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communications from Bayero University Kano. He furthered his education with a Masters degree in Public Policy and Administration and another in Crime Management, Prevention, and Control, both from the same institution.
According to John, Azare is a passionate, detribalized Nigerian who has served across various regions of the country in key roles, demonstrating commitment and loyalty to the nation.
His career has seen him excel in several major departments within the Nigeria Police Force, including Administration, Investigation, Operations, and Specialised Units. He has served as a Detective in the General Investigation Section of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Kano, and later in the Anti-Fraud Section of the same department. Azare also worked at the State Traffic Office of the Kano State Police Command, where he helped alleviate traffic congestion in the city, especially during festive periods.
Due to his distinguished performance and excellent relationships with the public, Azare was appointed as the Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, a position he held for about seven years.
Azare’s good rapport with colleagues and the public earned him numerous promotions and significant exposure to various sectors of the police force, as well as international training. His commitment to integrity and zero tolerance for corruption led to his secondment to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) headquarters in Abuja from 2012 to 2016.
During his tenure at EFCC, he served as the Head of the Counter Terrorism and General Investigation Unit, Head of Enforcement for Non-Designated Financial Institutions, and Special Assistant on Media to the EFCC Executive Chairman in 2016.
Azare is married with children and continues to be a dedicated public servant.
