No merger agreement with PDP, NNPP for 2027 elections – Obi

Peter Obi
Ahead of the 2027 general elections, Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has dismissed claims of a merger deal with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), or any other political group.

In a press conference held in Abuja on Thursday, Obi emphasized that no formal agreement had been reached with any party regarding a merger. He called on Nigerians and political stakeholders to unite in 2027 to oust the All Progressives Congress (APC), which he accused of mismanaging the nation’s resources.

Obi also expressed deep concern over the country’s security situation, describing it as tragic, with Nigerians losing their lives to banditry, terrorism, and kidnappings. He criticized the escalating corruption levels and the rising cost of governance, which has contributed to Nigeria’s growing public debt under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

The former Anambra State governor further highlighted the misuse of public funds in 2024, citing excessive foreign travels by government officials as a contributing factor.

In the 2023 presidential race, Tinubu triumphed in 12 states, securing 8,794,726 votes—nearly two million more than his closest rival, Atiku Abubakar of the PDP, who received 6,984,520 votes. Obi, in his first presidential bid, garnered a remarkable 6,101,533 votes. NNPP’s Rabiu Kwankwaso, finishing fourth with 1,496,687 votes, notably claimed his home state, Kano.

Interestingly, both Obi and Kwankwaso were former members of the PDP before departing due to irreconcilable differences.
