FG mandates history for primary, secondary students — Minister

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa
President Bola Tinubu has approved the reintroduction of History as a mandatory subject for primary and secondary school students, beginning in 2025.

Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, made the announcement during the 2024 Year-End Review on Channels Television on December 31, 2024.

History was removed from Nigeria’s basic school curriculum in 2007, sparking years of criticism. However, the education minister emphasized the importance of restoring it, stating, “One crucial element missing from our curriculum in recent years has been Nigerian history. We now have a generation of people, aged 30 and below, disconnected from our past. This is uncommon in other parts of the world.”

“President Bola Tinubu has directed that Nigerian history be reintegrated into the curriculum, and it will be compulsory. Starting in 2025, students in primary schools, JSS, and secondary schools will study it as part of their education.”
