Liverpool have firmly rejected Real Madrid’s attempt to sign Trent Alexander-Arnold during the January transfer window.
The 26-year-old defender, whose contract expires in the summer, is free to negotiate a pre-contract deal with other clubs starting January 1st.
Real Madrid has long been considered a potential destination for Alexander-Arnold, but their bid to fast-track the process has been unsuccessful. Liverpool swiftly rebuffed Madrid’s approach before any financial terms could be discussed.
Discussions between Liverpool’s executives and Alexander-Arnold’s representatives continue, though there are no public signs suggesting the England international is looking to leave his boyhood club.
While the situation remains unresolved, Liverpool is also negotiating with Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk over contract extensions. If the club wishes to retain all three players, balancing their wages within financial sustainability regulations will be a challenge.
Last summer, Liverpool made only one major signing — Federico Chiesa from Italy — who has since struggled with injuries. Selling Alexander-Arnold in January could generate funds, but Liverpool has ruled out that option, as he represents “pure profit” having come through the club’s youth ranks.
Real Madrid’s interest in Alexander-Arnold stems from their need to replace veteran right-back Dani Carvajal, who is out for the rest of the season due to a knee ligament injury. However, while Salah and Van Dijk have commented on their ongoing contract talks, Alexander-Arnold has yet to address the matter publicly.
Manager Arne Slot recently distanced himself from the negotiations, stating, “I have control over what they do on the training pitch or in a meeting with me. But if you’re talking about their private lives, I don’t have control. I expect them to perform on the pitch, and I’m pleased with what Trent, Mo, and Virgil are doing.”
Alexander-Arnold has been a central figure in Liverpool’s success, including Premier League and Champions League titles. With the club currently leading the league, the defender could potentially sign off with a second title if he stays for the remainder of the season.
