The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division and Commander of Operation SAFE HAVEN (OPSH), Major General A.E. Abubakar, on Saturday officially unveiled the Mariya Abiodun Lagbaja (MAL) Recreational Park at the Maxwell Khobe Cantonment in Jos, Plateau State.
The park is named in honor of Mrs. Mariya Abiodun Lagbaja, the immediate past President of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA), recognizing her significant contributions to the welfare of officers, soldiers, and their families, particularly within the 3 Division.
Designed to enrich the lives of the barracks community, the Mariya Abiodun Lagbaja Recreational Park boasts a variety of modern amenities, including a sparkling swimming pool, a state-of-the-art 5-a-side synthetic football pitch, and an array of recreational equipment such as trampolines, bouncy castles, electric merry-go-round trains, bicycles, swings, and battery-powered bikes. The park is fully floodlit, offering round-the-clock enjoyment for families.
In his address at the unveiling ceremony, Major General Abubakar emphasized the park’s role in fostering community spirit, promoting physical activity, and providing a space for relaxation and entertainment for military personnel and their families.
He encouraged the barracks community to make full use of the new facility, underscoring that the nearest similar recreational area was over 30 minutes away, making the park’s creation both timely and essential for promoting well-being.
The event also honored the late Lt. Gen. T.A. Lagbaja, the 23rd Chief of Army Staff, whose legacy continues to inspire both the military and the Plateau State community. Major General Abubakar praised Gen. Lagbaja not only for his distinguished service but for his commitment to community welfare.
“We remember Gen. Lagbaja not just for his military service, but for his deep belief in the importance of community and welfare. This park is a lasting tribute to his legacy,” said Major General Abubakar.
He concluded by reaffirming the military’s commitment to enhancing the well-being of its soldiers and their families, encouraging everyone to make the most of the new recreational space. “This park is more than just a place for leisure; it’s a vital part of our dedication to improving the quality of life for our soldiers and their loved ones,” he added.
