Enyimba FC have parted ways with Head Coach Yemi Olarenwaju following a string of disappointing performances that saw the team go nine matches without a win.
The record nine-time Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) champions have struggled under Olarenwaju, who was appointed in May after George Finidi’s brief and unsuccessful tenure as the Super Eagles head coach.
The decision to dismiss Olarenwaju comes after a goalless draw with Plateau United in the NPFL on the weekend, adding to a grim run of results.
“Enyimba FC can confirm that it has parted ways with head coach Yemi Olarenwaju,” the club said in a statement posted on its official social media channels on Saturday. “The club thanks Coach Olarenwaju for his services and wishes him the best in his future endeavors.”
During his 26-match tenure, Olarenwaju oversaw nine wins and seven losses. However, the team’s form in recent weeks has been concerning. Enyimba have failed to win in their last nine matches across all competitions, drawing six of their last league encounters. In the NPFL, they have managed just one win in 10 outings, leaving them in 11th place with 23 points after 15 matches.
The club’s struggles extend to continental football as well, where Enyimba are at the bottom of Group D in the CAF Confederation Cup, having earned only one point from three matches.
To address the team’s woes, Enyimba have appointed Stanley Eguma as the new head coach. Eguma, a former member of the coaching staff during Enyimba’s golden era in the early 2000s, brings a wealth of experience, having helped the club secure two CAF Champions League titles. He is tasked with reviving Enyimba’s fortunes both domestically and on the continental stage.
With Eguma at the helm, Enyimba will hope to regain their winning form and restore their reputation as one of Africa’s premier football clubs.
