Spanish footballer De Miguel dies after collision with keeper

Jesus de Miguel
Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel has died from injuries sustained in a sickening on-field collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono during a Spanish second-division match.

The 30-year-old died at 8:00 am local time on Tuesday, his club confirmed in a heartbreaking statement.

“Broken with pain, with a lump in our throat and unable to believe this is real, CD Tenerife announces the tragic death, at 8:00 am (7:00 am GMT), of Jesus de Miguel Alameda,” the club said.

“No words can ease the pain, nothing can lessen this great feeling of sadness. Our thoughts are with the family, his close friends and Tenerife fans, who today are grieving over this terrible news.”

De Miguel was involved in the horrific incident towards the end of the match when Owono, an Equatorial Guinea international goalkeeper, rushed out of his goal and collided with the Tenerife striker near the halfway line.

The match, which was level at 2-2, was subsequently abandoned after Owono was shown a red card following the incident.

Spanish media reports said De Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest and was resuscitated. However, Tenerife later revealed that his condition had deteriorated neurologically before confirming his death.

De Miguel had spent just over a season at Tenerife, having joined the club in the summer of 2025 from Castellon.

Tributes poured in from across Spanish football following the tragic news.

Former Barcelona defender Gerard Pique, who is the majority shareholder of FC Andorra, expressed his grief on social media.

“I am so deeply sorry. Rest in peace, Jesus,” Pique wrote.

FC Andorra also extended its “most sincere condolences” to De Miguel’s family, teammates and everyone at Tenerife.

Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and several other Spanish clubs joined in mourning the striker, alongside the Spanish Football Federation.

“Shattered by this sad news, the Royal Spanish Football Federation wishes to express our deepest sorrow at his passing today,” the federation said in a statement.
