Two police officers have been confirmed dead, while three others are receiving medical treatment following an attack by unidentified gunmen on the Uratta Divisional Police Station in Aba South Local Government Area of Abia State.
The Abia State Commissioner of Police, CP Wilfred Afolabi, confirmed the casualties while speaking to journalists at a hospital in Aba, shortly after Governor Alex Otti visited the scene of the attack.
Afolabi urged police officers to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent a recurrence of the incident.
The commissioner, who conducted the governor around the damaged facility, disclosed that the attackers set a police van ablaze and destroyed a Toyota vehicle, a power generator and other valuables within the station.
He said investigations were ongoing to identify and apprehend the perpetrators, assuring that they would be brought to justice.
Afolabi also thanked Otti for his intervention and his pledge to cover the medical expenses of the injured officers.
The attack comes amid a series of deadly assaults targeting security personnel across the country.
In May 2026, 17 officers were reportedly killed when terrorists attacked the Nigerian Army Special Forces School in Buni Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State.
The officers were undergoing specialised operational training at the facility when the attackers launched a coordinated assault in the early hours of May 8, 2026.
The Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, said the assailants stormed the training facility from multiple directions at about 1:15 a.m., triggering an intense confrontation that claimed the officers’ lives.
In a separate incident last month, a police officer was among five people killed in separate attacks in Barkin Ladi and Mangu Local Government Areas of Plateau State, despite a dusk-to-dawn curfew imposed on the affected areas.
Abia State has also recorded previous attacks on police personnel. In November 2024, a police officer was reportedly killed when gunmen ambushed a patrol team along Asaga Road in Ohafia Local Government Area.
The officers were said to have been on patrol when about six young men intercepted them. One officer was killed, while two others who sustained injuries reportedly escaped into the bush.
