Iran said on Monday that its delegation in New York had no plans to hold new talks with the United States, contradicting US President Donald Trump’s claim that negotiations could resume soon.
The official IRNA news agency, citing an unnamed source close to Iran’s delegation at the United Nations General Assembly, reported that no negotiations with Washington had been scheduled.
“Iran’s delegation in New York has no plans for negotiations with the United States,” the source said.
Trump told Axios on Sunday that he expected talks between Washington and Tehran to resume soon, a day after rejecting an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days.
The conflicting statements highlight continued uncertainty over the prospects for renewed diplomatic engagement between the two countries amid tensions over the strategic waterway.
