Candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have won four of the five legislative by-elections conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Gombe, Kano, Bauchi and Delta states.
The elections, held on Saturday, September 19, comprised one House of Representatives seat and four state assembly seats across the four states.
In Gombe State, APC candidate Kallamu MaiJama’a won the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency by-election with 41,121 votes. The Labour Party candidate polled 3,553 votes, while the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) scored 872 votes.
In Kano State, APC candidate Husseini Datti emerged victorious in the Dawakin Kudu State Constituency by-election with 22,890 votes, according to the results announced by the INEC returning officer, Ibrahim Suraj.
The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) scored 270 votes, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) polled 108 votes. The Action Democratic Party (ADP), Action Peoples Party (APP) and Labour Party recorded 89, 53 and 39 votes respectively.
The APC also won the Udu State Constituency by-election in Delta State, where its candidate, Okolosi Ator, secured 8,724 votes. The PDP candidate polled 214 votes.
The two state constituency by-elections held in Bauchi State produced different results.
APC candidate Yakubu Ali won the Disina State Constituency by-election with 5,846 votes. The APM candidate scored 5,225 votes, while the PRP polled 3,701 votes.
In the Sakwa State Constituency in Zaki Local Government Area, APM candidate Adamu Yakubu emerged winner with 8,515 votes. The APC candidate scored 3,771 votes, while the PDP and PRP recorded 2,076 and 727 votes respectively.
Reports indicated that voting was largely peaceful across the four states, with election officials and materials arriving on time in many locations.
However, low voter turnout was reported in parts of Gombe and Kano, while challenges with the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) were reported in Delta.
In Bauchi, the state police command said 47 suspects were arrested in some polling units in Shira Local Government Area.
According to the police, the suspects allegedly posed as members of a state-owned security outfit and were found in possession of firearms, cutlasses and sticks.
Meanwhile, INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan said the by-elections would provide the commission with operational lessons ahead of the 2027 general elections.
