Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Nigeria after representing President Bola Tinubu at the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi, India.
Shettima participated in the summit’s high-level sessions and held a series of bilateral engagements focused on advancing Nigeria’s economic and diplomatic interests, according to a statement issued on Tuesday by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications in the Office of the Vice President.
Among his key engagements was a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during which both leaders discussed opportunities to strengthen bilateral relations, including renewed crude oil trade, investment, pharmaceuticals, defence, digital technology, fintech and renewable energy.
Shettima also met with the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, where he reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to multilateralism and a more inclusive global economic order.
At the summit, the Vice President delivered President Tinubu’s message calling for reforms to global governance and international financial institutions.
He also positioned Nigeria as a gateway to Africa’s growing consumer market and investment opportunities under the African Continental Free Trade Area.
Nigeria used the summit to further strengthen its engagement with BRICS member and partner countries across key sectors, including agriculture, artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, manufacturing, healthcare, energy and human-capital development.
Shettima’s participation at the summit formed part of the Federal Government’s broader efforts to deepen Nigeria’s strategic partnerships, attract investment and expand economic opportunities through international cooperation.
