One dead, four rescued as four storey building collapses in Enugu

A four-storey building under construction has collapsed on Ogbalu Street in Independence Layout, Enugu State.

The building reportedly collapsed at about 6 a.m. on Sunday while workers were sleeping at the site.

Four workers have been rescued, while the body of one person has been recovered.

The State Capital Territory said the rescued workers are receiving treatment at the Enugu State Teaching Hospital. It added that one of the six people who were sleeping at the site had stepped out shortly before the building collapsed.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Nigerian Red Cross Society, the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the Enugu State Capital Territory Development Authority and the police are currently involved in the rescue operation.

The cause of the collapse has not yet been established, as concerns mount over building safety and regulatory enforcement in the state.
