Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in New Delhi, India, to represent President Bola Tinubu at the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit.
Shettima is leading a high-level Nigerian delegation to the summit, which brings together leaders of BRICS member and partner countries to discuss global governance, economic cooperation and shared development priorities.
The summit is being held under the theme, “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.”
The programme is expected to begin with a closed-door session for BRICS members on “Inclusive Global Governance and Strengthening Multilateralism.”
The leaders will also tour the Bharat Innovates Exhibition, participate in a joint tree-planting ceremony and attend a gala dinner hosted by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is also scheduled to hold several bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit.
Nigeria’s participation is expected to support the Federal Government’s efforts to deepen diplomatic and economic ties with BRICS members and partner countries, while expanding opportunities for trade, investment, technology and broader economic cooperation.
Members of the Nigerian delegation include the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu; Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Jumoke Oduwole; Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani; and Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal.
Other senior government officials are also accompanying the Vice President to the summit.
Nigeria’s engagement with BRICS comes as the government seeks to leverage its relationships with major emerging economies to attract investment, expand market access, strengthen technology partnerships and advance its broader economic interests.
The summit also provides an opportunity for Nigeria to engage directly with leaders and representatives of major emerging economies and deepen its participation in discussions shaping global economic and diplomatic cooperation.
