Fenerbahce duo Mason Greenwood and Matteo Guendouzi have been suspended by UEFA for their involvement in the chaotic scenes that followed their club’s Champions League play-off second-leg victory over Lyon.
Fenerbahce’s 2-1 win in France last month secured a 3-2 aggregate victory and qualification for the next stage. However, the match ended in ugly scenes as Greenwood and Guendouzi, who both previously played for Lyon’s bitter rivals Marseille, were involved in a confrontation with players and members of the coaching staff from both teams.
UEFA announced on Friday that Guendouzi had been suspended for four UEFA club competition matches for which he would otherwise be eligible.
The former Arsenal midfielder was punished “for insulting others present at the match, provoking spectators and for violating the basic rules of decent conduct”.
Two of the four matches are subject to a one-year probationary period, UEFA said.
Guendouzi was also fined €50,000 ($58,000) after being found guilty of, among other offences, making an offensive gesture towards Lyon supporters and engaging in provocations that contributed to the post-match scuffle.
Greenwood, the former Manchester United forward, received a one-match suspended ban and was fined €30,000 for “violating the basic rules of decent conduct”.
The sanctions were imposed following the incidents that marred Fenerbahce’s progression in the Champions League.
